Aims and objectives

Need for Microvascular Surgery
Essential for Post-Cancer Reconstruction
Microvascular surgery plays a vital role in restoring function and aesthetics after cancer ablation, especially in head and neck oncology.
Bridging the Training Gap
Despite its importance, there is currently no structured or formal training available in Microvascular Surgery for most surgical professionals.
Rising Demand for Skilled Surgeons
With increasing cancer cases, the need for specialized reconstructive surgeons in oral and maxillofacial regions continues to grow.
Complexity of Oral Cavity Reconstruction
Microvascular reconstruction offers the most effective solution for functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of oral cavity defects.
Empowering the Next Generation of Surgeons
This course is specifically designed to equip surgeons with practical, hands-on skills in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery.
Advancing Surgical Excellence
Through expert-led training and real clinical exposure, the program aims to enhance surgical outcomes and patient recovery.

The Head & Neck Reconstructive Surgery Service is based at compass cancer centre the with the majority of surgeries performed are Microvascular free flaps which include ALT, fibula, medial Sural artery, radial/ulnar forearm, and occasionally flaps based on the subscapular system with chimeric flaps commonly performed. Virtual surgical planning is performed for the majority of bony reconstructions. Nerve reconstruction is also performed but not on regular basis either as grafts (facial nerve, inferior alveolar nerve) or flap neurotization. Participant will develop their core microsurgical skill sets throughout the year and will be able to independently perform complex microsurgical reconstructions upon completion of the fellowship.
